Role Overview
We are looking for an experienced SQL Lead to oversee database design, performance optimisation, and data-management initiatives across multiple business functions.
This is a hands-on leadership role requiring strong expertise in SQL development, data modelling, and ETL processes. You will work as an individual contributor while mentoring team members and collaborating with data, business intelligence, and application teams to deliver secure, efficient, and reliable data solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and optimise complex SQL queries, stored procedures, views, and functions.
- Perform query optimisation, indexing, partitioning, and database-performance tuning.
- Design logical and physical data models for analytical and transactional systems.
- Develop, maintain, and enhance ETL workflows using SSIS, Azure Data Factory, or comparable tools.
- Ensure data quality, integrity, reliability, and compliance with enterprise standards.
- Collaborate with business intelligence, data science, and application teams to support reporting and analytics requirements.
- Review database code and establish best practices for SQL development, database design, and maintenance.
- Mentor junior developers and provide technical guidance to the wider development team.
- Troubleshoot complex database and data-processing issues and implement appropriate resolutions.
- Manage multiple development priorities while ensuring the timely delivery of high-quality data solutions.
- Drive continuous improvement in database performance, maintainability, scalability, and operational efficiency.
Required Qualifications
- 8 to 12 years of relevant experience in SQL development, database engineering, or data management.
- Strong hands-on expertise in SQL, including complex queries, stored procedures, views, and functions.
- Experience with database-performance tuning, query optimisation, indexing, and partitioning.
- Strong knowledge of logical and physical data modelling for analytical and transactional systems.
- Experience developing and maintaining ETL workflows and data pipelines.
- Understanding of data quality, integrity, governance, and enterprise data standards.
- Experience collaborating with business intelligence, data science, application, and other cross-functional teams.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor developers, review code, and establish database-development best practices.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, communication, and collaboration skills.
- Ability to work independently, contribute hands-on, and manage multiple priorities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with SSIS, Azure Data Factory, or comparable ETL technologies.
- Experience with Azure SQL Database, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure SQL Managed Instance, or similar cloud-based SQL services.
